One moment that immediately puts me in vacation mode is when I wake up in the morning and can gaze out over the sparkling surface of a Swiss lake. Whether it’s Lake Constance, Lake Lucerne, or Lake Thun – Switzerland not only boasts diverse bodies of water but also enchantingly situated hotels, from which you can reach the cool waters in just a few steps.
During our excursions, we’ve scouted out many hotels by the lake. And in some, we’ve returned more than once. The range extends from simple but charming lodgings to luxurious 5-star resorts with top-notch comfort and service. What unites them is their enviable location right by the lake and the breathtaking views.
The lengthening and warming days awaken in me a longing for the lake breeze. Do you feel the same? And are you looking for a beautiful lakeside hotel in Switzerland for a relaxing weekend? Then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, you’ll find, as inspiration, a selection of what I consider to be the most beautiful Swiss hotels with lake access.
Palafitte Hotel on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel
The Palafitte Hotel in Neuchâtel offers an unparalleled experience with its 24 lake pavilions gracefully perched on stilts above the tranquil waters of Lake Neuchâtel. Inspired by the prehistoric pile dwellings that once dotted the region, the hotel’s architecture seamlessly blends with its natural surroundings, providing guests with a truly unique accommodation option.
Upon arrival, guests are greeted with the opportunity to immediately immerse themselves in the refreshing waters of Lake Neuchâtel, thanks to the convenient access provided by the pavilions. This instant connection with the lake sets the tone for a serene and rejuvenating stay.
One of the standout features of the Palafitte Hotel is the breathtaking panoramic view it offers over Lake Neuchâtel, extending all the way to the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Alpine chain in the distance. This uninterrupted vista serves as a constant reminder of the beauty and grandeur of the surrounding landscape.
During sunny summer days, guests can further explore the lake’s pristine waters directly from the hotel, whether it be through leisurely paddleboarding sessions or adventurous kayaking excursions. The hotel provides stand-up paddleboards and kayaks for guests to use, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the natural splendor of the lake.
Even on days when the weather may not cooperate, there’s no shortage of things to do and see at the Palafitte Hotel. The nearby charming old town of Neuchâtel beckons with its quaint cobblestone streets, historic landmarks, and vibrant cultural scene, offering guests a wealth of opportunities for exploration and discovery. Whether strolling through centuries-old alleyways, visiting museums and galleries, or indulging in local culinary delights, there’s always something to captivate the senses and enrich the experience, regardless of the weather.
Hotel Bad Horn on Lake Constance
At the Bad Horn Hotel & Spa, you’ll find the perfect setting for a getaway right on Lake Constance. The nautical ambiance extends through the four-star superior hotel, even to the room decor. The rooms themselves feature spacious windows with lake views. The 1,500 m² wellness area also reflects the proximity to the lake. Guests can look forward to a Finnish sauna with a large porthole at lake level and direct lake access. So even on rainy days, relaxation is delightful. When the weather is nice, the surroundings are worth exploring. The Bad Horn Hotel & Spa is perfectly situated for cycling tours through the blooming Thurgau countryside or for a trip to St. Gallen.
Hotel Eden Roc on the shores of Lake Maggiore
Located on the shores of Lake Maggiore, the Hotel Eden Roc in Ascona entices with a palm-lined private beach, expansive gardens, and 5-star comfort. Here, you’ll experience the feeling of beach holidays without the need for long travel times. With so much space and four hotel-owned restaurants, you may wonder if it’s even necessary to leave Eden Roc during your stay. Nevertheless, if you feel the need, the hotel’s prime location offers numerous possibilities. The picturesque promenade of Ascona is right next to Eden Roc. From here, you can take a boat trip to the Brissago Islands or stroll towards Monte Verità.
Hotel & Restaurant Kaiserstuhl on Lake Lungern
The Hotel & Restaurant Kaiserstuhl, located directly on Lake Lungern, underwent a gentle “facelift” a few years ago. The result is impressive. Nicely furnished rooms, a cozy sun terrace, and stunning views of the surrounding mountain scenery. Just a few meters from the hotel, there is a bathing beach. And there are varied hiking trails all around.
Hotel Terrasse on the Lake
Since 1873, the Hotel Terrasse on Lake Lucerne in Vitznau has been captivating guests from around the world with its fantastic location. In recent years, the hotel has also become a stopover for cyclists. With a special bike package created in collaboration with other Swiss Historic Hotels, you can explore the beautiful landscape around Lake Lucerne on two wheels. If you prefer a more relaxed pace, simply unwind and enjoy the breathtaking view after check-in. Alternatively, the Rigi Railway valley station and the boat landing stage are right next to the hotel.
Schloss Schadau on Lake Thun
Schloss Schadau, located in the Schadaupark in Thun, inspired by English landscape gardens, is known for its impressive Alpine panorama and fairytale appearance. It is considered one of the most significant castle buildings of romantic historicism and is a cultural asset of national importance. After various mixed uses, the castle was converted into a hotel from 2017 to 2019. We were personally convinced of the casual combination of historical elements and youthful freshness during a short stay. Within walking distance of Schloss Schadau is the Strandbad Thun – one of the most beautiful lakeside baths in Switzerland!
Youth Hostel Leissigen on Lake Thun
I’ve experienced many beautiful moments at the Youth Hostel Leissigen on Lake Thun. The former summer residence of the Ovomaltine inventor now houses what I consider to be the most beautiful youth hostel in Switzerland. The main attraction here is a cozy lawn with direct lake access and a small, fine gravel beach. Truly enviable! The room furnishings are simple, and there are no private showers/toilets. However, the excellent location and spectacular sunsets more than make up for it!
Romantik Seehotel Sonne on Lake Zurich
You can also enjoy a stay with direct lake access on Lake Zurich. My tip: The quietly located Romantik Seehotel Sonne, which stands for almost 400 years of hosting tradition. I particularly like the successful combination of historical charm and modern comfort. Located ten minutes from the hustle and bustle of Zurich’s Sechseläutenplatz, in Küsnacht, this is the perfect setting for a short break. Now all you have to do is decide whether to spend your time on a sun lounger or under the shady trees of the cozy beer garden. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, a small, fine wellness area or Zurich’s diverse cultural offerings await.
